Symbols
Khaled Hosseini
uses a variety of symbols to deepen the theme and express his idea in vague
language. In my opinion, pomegranate tree, kite and the slingshot are the most
notable symbols in the novel.
Pomegranate tree symbolizes the happy childhood of Hassan and Amir. Pomegranate tree shows up at the beginning and the end of the novel, it also symbolizes the relationship between Hassan and Amir. Amir always reads story for Hassan under the pomegranate tree. They engrave their name on the tree to claim that the tree is their property. They spend their happy, free, and careless life under the pomegranate tree. Their relationship ends at the pomegranate tree as well. After Hassan’s rape, Amir hits Hassan by using pomegranate and he asks Hassan to hit back. Hassan is the only person who is loyal to Amir and willing to devote himself to Amir, thus, Hassan would rather hit himself than hit Amir. Hassan promise Amir that he would do everything that Amir asks him to do under the pomegranate tree. The tree is the witness of their happy childhood, it is also the witness of their broken and growth. The tree is a very important symbol of the novel.
Kite is a crucial symbol in the novel; it represents freedom, tragic and the love between two generations. Basically, kite is the main story line; it runs through the entire story. Kite flies in the sky; it represents freedom, just like the life of Amir. Amir is the person who controls the kite; he can do whatever he wants, for instance, he wants to write stories, then he becomes a writer. However, Hassan is always like the kite, he cannot control his life, he cannot do whatever he wants, his life is always grasped by others. He lives for Amir instead of himself. Hassan’s life is like the kite, which was cut by others. Hassan always runs the kite for Amir; it symbols his love and devotion for Amir. Amir understands Hassan’s love for him many years later, and he shows his love to Sohrab through the kite. The kite connects the two generations together, and it symbols love between them.
Hassan is a specialist of slingshot, as well as Sohrab. In the novel, both Hassan and Sohrab use slingshot to protect themselves and Amir. The slingshot symbolizes rebellion from powerless people to powerful people. It also symbolizes the cycle of love between two generations. It also symbolizes courage. Hassan’ s courage threatens Assef and saves Amir and himself. Sohrab’ courage shoots Assef, and his courage helps Amir and himself flee away successfully.
